Julie leant me a beautiful vintage Land Camera for One of One. I think it’s from the 1950s. It has no flash, but is sleekly designed and folds to fit in a pocket. Originally I made work while in the Orkneys and Hebrides, thinking of time passing and how land use shifts; Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar, the abandoned harbour near Ròineabhal, a mountain that was to be quarried for aggregate. Subsequently I made a new series, thinking about a moment of creation, a flicker of light. I got inside one of my largest paintings and moved the camera around so that it couldn’t quite focus and I didn’t know exactly what the result would be. I wanted to think about both the photographic and painting processes, and the agricultural references in my work, so named the series ‘Photosynthesis’. I think these Polaroid images will lead to new large works.
